The World Rubik’s Cube Championship 2007 was held in Budapest, Hungary, the birthplace of the puzzle. In just 12.46 seconds, Japan’s Yu Nakajima won the Rubik’s Cube World Championships. He won on the classic six-sided 3×3 cube. But Frenchman Thibaut Jacquinot still holds the world record of 9.86 seconds in the classic 3×3 event, which he set last May.

The Rubik’s Cube became one of the cult objects of the 1980s and the toy is experiencing a revival these days with millions of cubes sold annually. More than 300 million cubes have been sold to date and organizers says 12 million will go on the shelves this year alone. The Rubik’s Cube, an invention of Hungarian architect Erno Rubik, has been exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and has been entered into the Oxford dictionary.

I for one, own a piece of this perplexing puzzle. I was playing with it since I was in grade school. Although I can solve just a few sides of the puzzle myself, I have never solved it fully. But since I’ve revived my passion for this toy, and started researching on the various ‘moves’ in which to solve the puzzle faster. As a side note, you can watch video tutorials on how to solve this cube using algorithms that are used by speed cubers on YouTube.
