Are you right-brained or left-brained?
I wasn’t really going to post this here, as I was planning to post this on my personal blog, but it just keep popping up in different websites (my subscribed RSS feeds to be exact). Since I don’t have much time to post this morning, I’ll just have to make this short. Anyway here it is…

(The image above is an animated GIF)
To know what side of your brain is more dominant, just look at the moving picture. If you see her going clockwise, then you are using the creative side of your brain which is the right. If she moves counter-clockwise, then the logical part of your brain is working, which is the left side.
My first impression on the image is that she was moving clockwise, I was surprised since I know that I have a balanced-brain (according to the PHD test I took a couple of months back), or I use my brain’s left side the most. But then after a few seconds of staring at the picture, it gradually turned direction. I don’t know how that happened, but I know one thing, I suck at creativity.

wtf? im seeing this image go clockwise then go counterclockwise and so on and so forth, what does it mean? XD
Ryman
it probably means you’re switching brain functions.
don
oic, is there anyone else experiencing what i’m experiencing?
Darius
I had see it spining at both directions
First clockwise, now anti-clockwise
don
@darius
that’s nice to know, i thought i was different hehehehe, Godsend maybe? hahahaha xD
connie
When I first caught the picture I saw her spinning counterclockwise then I looked more intensely and saw her spinning both directions one movement then back the other direction with the next.movement then I kept watching and she started spinning clockwise!!
My diagnosis is that my brain worked first at trying to understand what I was looking at then realized the art in it and used my creative side to visualize it’s beauty.
I have a background in science and have won awards for my photography and art work! Guess that explains some of it!

so, should i say thanks? Haha.
sara
She is switching feet. Several minutes into rotation, they switch from left foot down to right foot down. Left foot anchored is clockwise and right foot anchored is counter. See for yourself.
rempy
r u kidding me? I can only see it clockwise. I have no idea how you could see it other than that?! Look at the bent right arm. if you put yourself into a clockwise spin, your right arm is bent for your cyntrifugal force – its straight physics . i can’t see it any other way…do i need a doc?
Dok
Well, obviously if you look at it long enough it changes at some point fro one direction to another. There is no left-brain right-brain answer. It is not an illusion whatsoever.
Josh henman
Ok the woman is going noway because its all your brain. your brain decides what way it moves i can literally change it each time it moves.within a 3 sec ond cooldown you change it left . . . right . . . left and so on i can do it manytimes in a row but its hard. i can also make it stay right or stay left and pretty much change it when i please this illusion is very tricky its about your mind and personality like it says. and i can change it consecutively any way i desire..
roger
she’s moving? I think I need a Doc
Vivienne
I answered the poll too quickly. I see her moving in both directions because her legs seem to be one. She doesn’t change from left to right leg to left again, her legs are one leg, it’s an illusion that she has two legs. She moves for a time clockwise, then for a time anti-clockwise. Good fun, but I have to say it says nothing about a person’s brain and more about the clever creation of illusion.
Vivienne
It’s going in both direction intermittantly hahahahaha great fun! lol.
don
everytime i blink my eye, she shifts spin directions XD
Claudia
Will someone explain how this works???…. I mean i see it and I can move it anyway I want, but I would really like for someone to explain to me how it works!!
Vivienne
Gee Guys.
There’s 34 images and they all look as if she is only going one way, clockwise.
So, why do I see her intermittantly going anti-clockwise. I see her left leg/left hip swinging, then I see her right leg/right hip swinging in the other direction.
Why can’t my son see her spinning both ways. He tells me it’s an optical illusion and people will see it according to how their eye/brain is wired.
Confused.
Ryman
The comment posted by Vivienne got me curious, so I also extracted the images. And yes, she’s right, it contains 34 still images But when I look at the arrangement (sort order) of the image, it looks like it is going clockwise halfway, then going anti-clockwise halfway.
Another test I made was with a friend. I can switch the rotation of the way I perceive the image, but my friend is having a difficult time changing it into a counter-clockwise rotation. While we are both staring at the image at the same time and at the same screen, we are seeing the image in different rotation, although my own “view” changes while his are mostly clockwise.
I can assume that how you view the rotation of the image depends on how (and which part) it was processed by your brain.
@rempy
you should focus more on the image, just focus and if your brain processed it using its left side, the image will gradually change direction.
@Claudia
I’m not an expert on these things, but according to the source site of the image. If you are seeing it rotate clockwise you are using the right side of your brain, that part is in-charge of our creativity. But if you are seeing it rotate counter-clockwise you are using the left side of your brain, that part is what we use for logic thinking.
Vivienne
Thanks Ryman,
It was a difficult puzzle, I so wanted to prove it had nothing to do with individual brain function and everything to do with it being a clever illusion. But, it got the better of me and made me realise we all perceive the world differently. As people who are colourblind see differently.
When I stare at the image I focus on the hip/leg, which alters as I look at it. From the image using the leff hip/leg to using the right hip/leg. I’ve tried to make it happen, to alter it’s direction using mind over matter, sometimes it does, sometimes not for awhile. Which led me to think that I wasn’t in control of what I was seeing.
I have done other tests online which tell me I have equal left/right brain function, I always thought it was hogwash and there must be a rational explaination. Perhaps I should read up on brain function. `When I first started Yoga and Meditation I found I could manipulate what I saw changing the colours I saw with my eyes closed. Perhaps there’s more to this than meets the eye.
Vivienne
I’ve just done another experiment, even though it feels as if I am making it turn anti-clockwise after turning clockwise. If I then stare at the shadow of the leg, extreme bottom, which always moves right to left, then it makes her go back to clockwise, even when I don’t want her to. A bigger puzzle.
Vivienne
HAHAHAHAHAHA If I concentrate only on the shadow of the swinging foot, she only moves slightly from left to right and back over the area of the shadow only, in a confused manner. Never swinging any further than that.
Vivienne
So, if I’m right, it’s the shadow that makes us think she is moving in a circular fashion, when she’s really only moving in a sideways and back fashion. 3D imagery at it’s best. Or am I just a born cynic.
Ryman
@Vivienne
I think the image only turns half-way according to the extracted still images. Its just that our brain perceive it to be turning the whole way.
Also another theory is that, because it is only a silhouette, the flipping effect of the images with the addition of the shadow shows us an optical illusion. But because other people process the it in a different rotation, how can we truly know if it is really turning clockwise or anti-clockwise.
——-
As a side note, the image moves faster if viewed using Mozilla Firefox browser, rather than Internet Explorer.
Vivienne
Thank you Ryman,
You are right it is faster on Firefox and easier to stop it from appearing to revolve. If you take your eyes only over the shadow from side to side as quickly as you can, you clearly see her correct state as she only moves the width of the shadow.
It is only giving the appearance of revolving, our brain seems to be filling in the rest. Perhaps we are seeing the functioning of our brains as we attempt to work it all out. We shouldn’t believe all that we see.
Thank you for your help.
Corvus
i can which between the two, hehe i like it
Brenda
I have stared at this for 10 minutes and can see no chage in direction from clockwise she also appears to jump slightly as she turns when her back is towards me . Perhaps its just the result of old age (68)
Diana
I saw it first go anticlockwise, then switch to go clockwise, but would then switch a couple times
caroline
i see her move clockwise and i am also left handed. my daughters see her moving anti-clockwise and they are both right handed. remeber our handedness determines which brained we are.
Dianne
Don,
I see the figure the same way you do. The interesting point is that you may be able to train yourself by slightly staying out of focus to see her turn 180 to the left then 180 to the right. I must have too much time on my hands.
mimi
Well, try this…close your eyes and think of her changing directions. Or take your cursor and flip it in the opposite direction…she changes!! Anyway it is fun!
don
@dianne
i think i’ve mastered how to make the figure turn when i want it to. i just blink my eyes, sometimes all it takes is two blinks, sometimes 5 blinks but never more than 10 blinks. weird xD
illusion
Hey I can switch the direction of her spinning whenever I like. Either way she spins she has a nice figure =)
illusion
just look down briefly and then back up, it has nothing to do with blinking
illusion
it fepends on what your thinking, after writing its going to spin clockwise.. when analysing something or trying to solve something it will spin the other way,, its all depends on which part of your brain is active at the given time
Beverly Cannaday
Saw it both ways
Inwe
Guys! Once glance and you can tell it’s clockwise.
It’s does’nt even change directions. (“,)
Ryman
@Inwe
The direction of the rotation is dependent on the viewer. With practice you can view the rotation both counter and clockwise. Try looking at the feet, then the body.
Ymond
Nope it is just an illusion of the mind…it only goes from left to right, i think vivienne mentioned this one. Although it made me think at first that its going clockwise then counter-clockwise, then if you stare down at her foot…you’d be able to catch her going in two side-directions only…bravo!
Nadine
It moves clockwise!
Rizmar John
well, me I can change the direction depending on what i think
