Asus Eee PC, a cheap alternative to laptops

The new Asus Eee PC is a cheap and affordable alternative to those who want to buy a laptop. It is generally smaller than your average laptop and is very much cheaper. It is already being sold here in the Philippines, and prices range from 16,000 php to 18,500 php, as far as information sources goes.

Here are some specs of the unit:

  • Display: 7″
  • Processor: Intel mobile CPU (Intel 910 chipset, 900MHz Dothan Pentium M)
  • Memory: 512MB RAM
  • OS: Linux (Asus customized flavor)
  • Storage: 8GB or 16GB flash hard drive
  • Webcam: 300K pixel video camera
  • Battery life: 3 hours using 4-cell battery
  • Weight: 2lbs
  • Dimensions: 8.9 in x 6.5 in x 0.82 in – 1.37 in (width x depth x thickness)
  • Ports: 3 USB ports, 1 VGA out, SD card reader, modem, Ethernet, headphone out, microphone in

IMHO, if you already have a laptop, don’t bother with this one. The specs are not that great, but since it is very compact and light, it’s just a trade off. Most included softwares are free and open source (that’s why it is cheap). It is powered by a custom designed Linux OS, uses Mozilla Firefox as a browser, has included Skype and IM via Kopete. And I’m assuming to open word and excel files here, you use the free app, Open Office and/or Google docs. Most apps are Internet based.

Boot up is 10 seconds, shutdown is 5 seconds, possibly because of the flash based hard drive. But the downside to it is that it doesn’t have Wi-Fi, and that is important in a portable online tool. You can however, plug cables into its Ethernet or modem slot. Or you can just subscribe to a wireless broadband and/or 3G internet and use that in your Asus Eee PC.
