Air-to-air refuelling, in which a military aircraft tops up its supplies by plugging in to a pipe trailing from a tanker plane, is a key military capability and one of the trickier piloting feats. Now that robots can do it, unmanned aircraft can potentially stay airborne for very long periods, limited only by maintenance requirements (The Register).
While impressive on its own, such systems have special relevance because they offer the promise of unmanned fighters that can remain aloft far longer than aircraft which require human pilots. The result would be far longer strike reach and persistence, two areas that will be critical to the US Navy’s ability to keep its carrier force relevant and effective through the next 3 decades (Defense Industry Daily).

Soon we will be seeing the movie Stealth in reality. I just hope we don’t see the ‘rise of the machines’ in real life. And now for those geeks out there, doesn’t that robot looks familiar. That’s right R2, we’re going to the Dagobah system.
